Getting into surfing, or know somebody that is? The Essentials of Surfing is the authoritative guide to waves, surfboards, safety, and techniques for teaching the beginning and intermediate surfer. Professor Lafferty's idea was to write a text book for surfing – one understandable by all ages. Learning to surf is far harder than learning to drive or understanding Calculus, yet there is no manual and few places to turn to prepare beginners for a lesson or to use as a reference after a lesson. The Essentials of Surfing will give you the knowledge you need to be more confident about learning to surf, avoid conflicts with other surfers, and diminish your chances of becoming a productive member of society. The book starts out by describing waves. It then lists the types of surfboards you will see in the water, explaining which ones work best for learning and how to care for your own board. You’ll also get advice on what to wear in the water to protect you from sun, rashes, and the cold. Most importantly, The Essentials of Surfing lists the informal rules of surfing to help you get along with other surfers in the line up. This book outlines common hazards and how you can protect yourself from them. It also includes a detailed step-by-step lesson in surfing your first wave. The book then gives advice on how to advance beyond the beginner level. A glossary at the end of the book lists some technical jargon and slang specific to surfing. Read this book straight through to get the big picture. Then, use it as a reference as you learn. When you’re done, teach a friend and give it to them.

The Essentials of Surfing Dr Kevin D Lafferty JR Johnson 9780991208807 Books Reviews

When learning to surf, there is a lot of stuff that friends and teachers gloss over when they've been doing it a long time. This book covers all kinds of details, such as wetsuits, waves, and what to expect when you first get out on the water. A great gift for anyone interested in surfing.
Great Book, Insightful and useful to those looking into surfing. Dr. Kevin really knows his stuff.
An interesting and entertaining book for beginning surfers or a good review for the experienced!
I caught several things I was ALMOST doing right but not quite, so this was a great book for me. This really is a fun read as the author throws in some quite decent jokes with a real attention to detail of the process of surfing --> A++ would recommend!!
First, there's no need for any more surfers in the lineup. It's already too crowded out there. But if you already surf, or have been bitten by the surf bug or have a child who wants nothing more than paddle out, this book is for you. It offers essential wisdom. The book is written largely for beginners, or at least those who haven't spent decades riding waves, learning from trial and error. That means, by reading it, you can avoid unnecessary dings to your board and bruises to your body or ego. It's not surprising that Kevin Lafferty, a PhD marine biologist and UC Santa Barbara professor, could distill decades of acquired knowledge into a brisk 107 pages -- including a helpful glossary to understand surfer jargon. He offers concise, practical advice on surfing maneuvers, understanding swells and surf breaks, and how to pick an appropriate board, etc. His chapter on surfer etiquette is, as Lafferty points out, his most important. Amen, brother. I wish all surfers would buy this book and read that chapter alone. Hint It begins on page 41, and explains the basic principles of which surfer has the right of way on a wave, and how to avoid being an obstacle in the path of someone riding a wave, keeping your board under control so it doesn't clobbering someone else or otherwise being a jerk. He even brings up the A word Apologize, if you make a mistake or drop-in on someone else riding deeper in the wave. The biggest challenge facing 20 million surfers is whether we can all get along. Lafferty handles this well, giving a newbie all of the tools he or she needs to get started. For more experienced surfers, especially those who demonstrate their need for remedial work, I recommend former world champ Shaun Tompson's slender guidebook, "Surfer's Code 12 Simple Lessons for Riding Through Life."
This book explains surfing in a language that is very easy to understand, and the author wastes no time writing boring sections. The book was overall very entertaining, and I read through the whole thing in one day. It is an awesome resource for those of us who are new to surfing, and it really provides great base information for the sport. I recommend this book, because it is a very good, informative read.
